The Operas of Monteverdi

The first masterpiece of opera is Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, composed in 1607 for the court of Mantua. It is very different in aesthetic from his two other surviving operas, created thirty years later to entertain audiences in the first public opera houses in Venice. All three works are explored in this course, along with insights from a performer’s point of view.
